Take your classic teenage tragedy song and mix it well with a Gothic feel....and you get 1977's "Bat Out of Hell".
I loved this song the first time I heard it.
The operatic, rock and roll, I dont know what, all mixed together perfectly.
The song was written by Jim Steinman for his 1977 musical Neverland, which was based on Peter Pan.
It is as tightly structured as a novel, with everything meaning something.
The imagery is pretty darn near perfect.
"The sirens are screaming, and the fires are howling
Way down in the valley tonight."
But if it wasn't for Meat Loaf's vocals, the song just wouldn't have flown.
I heard Mr. Loaf's performance described once as someone whose family had been taken hostage, and he had to sing to free them.
The man put everything he had and more into the song.
At that time, no one could hold a candle to him.
The sheer power and emotion that he let rip was unequaled.
Add to that the fact that the back up performers were from the E Street Band and Utopia, and you had an unbeatable formula.
Clocking in at almost ten minutes, here is the full version of Bat Out of Hell....
