America's National Bird is the American Bald Eagle. The Bald Eagle is a majestic eagle that has homes in most of the 50 States here.
However, did you know there was some controversy about which bird should be the National Bird? There was, and it was Benjamin Franklin that caused the controversy.
His idea of a the National Bird was to symbolize a bird that helped the Pilgrims stave off starvation. That bird was the infamous Wild Turkey! Franklin pushed hard for the turkey, but was outvoted.
So there you have it. The Wild Turkey was almost the National Bird of the United States of America, but because level heads prevailed, we now have the American Bald Eagle as our National Bird
