Today is still 11/11/2014 and Veterans Day. With this post I honor and remember the service and sacrifice of my grandfather Elmer Hurley. He served during WWI as a member of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe.
The image above shows my grandfather's Meritorious Medal for his service as a communications courier, running messages back and forth from the trenches and the Brigade Headquarters. Few men with this position lived longer than 3 months, but grandfather reportedly held this position for a full six months.
He was a great grandfather and though he has been gone for almost fifty years, I can still remember times, and things, that we did together. He is buried with my grandmother at the Fort Logan Memorial Cemetery in Englewood, Colorado.
